Short answer: divide the length by 40 cm and round up, divide the width by 40 cm and round up, then multiply the two whole numbers. A 160 x 200 cm rug is 4 x 5 tiles, so it needs exactly 20 tiles. Do not calculate a cut room from floor area alone: TOLI's own manual lists 64 tiles for a 300 x 300 cm room because each 300 cm side needs eight 40 cm tile positions.

Enter the finished length and width
The calculator rounds each side up to complete TOLI AK35 or AK27 tiles. It is exact for a rectangular rug made from whole tiles and a grid baseline for wall-to-wall planning.
20 tiles cover 3.20 m² / 34.4 sq ft before any perimeter cutting.

AK35 Ripple Palette Neo and AK27 Canvas Fine use the same 400 x 400 mm module. One tile covers 0.16 m², or about 1.72 sq ft. Area is useful for comparing coverage, but rows and columns determine how many physical squares the rectangle needs.
- Measure the finished rectangle. For a rug, measure the rug footprint rather than the entire room. For wall-to-wall work, measure every wall, recess, and fixed obstruction.
- Convert each side to centimeters.Multiply feet by 30.48. Keep the full number until the tile grid has been calculated.
- Round each side up separately.Columns = ceiling(length in cm / 40). Rows = ceiling(width in cm / 40).
- Multiply rows by columns.Required tiles = columns x rows. The complete-tile footprint is columns x 40 cm by rows x 40 cm.
Whole-tile rug sizes from TOLI's manual
TOLI's installation manual publishes four accent-rug examples for its 40 cm Attack and Panelcarpet series. These counts use complete modules, so there is no hidden cutting allowance.
| Finished rug | Approx. imperial size | Grid | Exact tiles |
|---|---|---|---|
| 120 x 160 cm | 3.9 x 5.2 ft | 3 x 4 | 12 |
| 160 x 160 cm | 5.2 x 5.2 ft | 4 x 4 | 16 |
| 160 x 200 cm | 5.2 x 6.6 ft | 4 x 5 | 20 |
| 200 x 240 cm | 6.6 x 7.9 ft | 5 x 6 | 30 |
Use the rug size guide to place those footprints around a sofa, bed, or desk. Then use the carpet tile calculator and color designer to turn the chosen grid into an AK35 or AK27 layout.
Why a 3 x 3 m room needs 64 tiles, not 57
The tempting shortcut is 9 m² divided by 0.16 m², rounded up to 57 tiles. That number ignores the half-tile position at the end of every 3 m row and column. TOLI's manual instead gives 64 as its guideline: 300 / 40 = 7.5, round each side up to 8, then calculate 8 x 8.
| Room size | Rounded grid | TOLI guide count |
|---|---|---|
| 300 x 300 cm | 8 x 8 | 64 tiles |
| 300 x 400 cm | 8 x 10 | 80 tiles |
| 400 x 400 cm | 10 x 10 | 100 tiles |
| 400 x 500 cm | 10 x 13 | 130 tiles |
| 500 x 500 cm | 13 x 13 | 169 tiles |
TOLI labels these room counts as guides and says to adjust them to the actual room. A precise cut plan may reuse some sufficiently large offcuts, while alcoves, angled walls, pillars, damaged pieces, or a centered layout can change the quantity. Sketch those features before ordering.
Rug count, wall-to-wall count, and spare count are different
| Project | Counting method | Extra tiles |
|---|---|---|
| Complete-tile rug | Rows x columns | No cutting waste; one or two optional spares |
| Rectangular wall-to-wall room | Round both sides up, then verify the perimeter plan | Depends on cuts and room conditions |
| Irregular room | Draw the shape and divide it into measured rectangles | Confirm reusable offcuts and difficult corners |
A generic 10% setting is not automatically correct for every project. A 4 x 5 rug needs 20 installed tiles, with zero cut waste. Adding one or two spares is a separate choice for quick future replacement. For a cut room, the drawing matters more than applying the same percentage to every shape.
Three counting mistakes that change the order
- Rounding only the final area result. A partial tile position occurs along a side, so round the length and width separately before multiplying.
- Entering the room when you only want a rug. Measure the intended finished carpet footprint. Otherwise the calculator will correctly produce a much larger wall-to-wall grid.
- Mixing installed tiles and spares. Keep the exact design count visible, then list optional spare pieces separately. That makes the color breakdown, freight, and future replacement stock easier to understand.
How case quantities work for AK35 and AK27
TOLI's current Japanese product pages list 10 tiles per case for both collections. One case therefore contains 1.6 m², about 17.2 sq ft, of tile area. The same pages state that orders of 10 or more can be placed in one-tile units with colors mixed, so a 24-tile design does not have to become 30 tiles solely to form three complete cases.
Tile count does not change when you switch collections. AK35 and AK27 are both 40 x 40 cm. Choose between them by pile texture, fiber, pet-related features, colors, and price using the AK35 vs AK27 comparison. International freight and the product subtotal then use the exact quantity in the design.
