What size carpet tile rug do you need for a sofa, bed, or desk?

Measure the furniture zone, round each side to complete 40 cm modules, then test the finished footprint on the floor before choosing colors.

A useful rug size follows where feet and furniture actually meet the floor, not just a generic room label.

Fast starting point: 12 tiles make 120 x 160 cm, 20 tiles make 160 x 200 cm, and 30 tiles make 200 x 240 cm. These are planning sizes, not universal rules. Mark the rectangle with tape and check it from the doorway before ordering.

Five useful 40 cm carpet tile rug sizes

TOLI's current Fabric Floor planning guide shows 12-, 16-, 20-, and 30-tile accent layouts for 40 cm products. AK35 and AK27 both use 40 x 40 cm tiles, about 15.7 x 15.7 inches, so every complete row adds 40 cm to one side of the rug.

How to calculate any modular rug size

  1. Measure the desired soft zone.Measure the furniture and the useful landing or chair area, not only the room walls.
  2. Divide each side by 40 cm.In inches, divide by 15.7. Round each side up separately because partial tiles are not part of a simple removable layout.
  3. Multiply the completed grid.A 155 x 190 cm target becomes 4 x 5 tiles, so the finished rug is 160 x 200 cm and uses 20 tiles.
  4. Tape and walk the outline.Check the doorway view, furniture legs, chair route, door swing, vents, and raised outside edges.

The free carpet tile designer performs the rounding automatically in centimeters or feet and turns the result into a paintable AK35 or AK27 grid.

What size carpet tile rug works with a sofa?

A living-room rug should visually connect the seating rather than float beneath the coffee table alone. IKEA's rug guide uses two helpful placement ideas: the rug can be longer than the sofa, and at least part of the sofa can sit on it. Treat those as visual heuristics, not fixed measurements, because sofa depth, chaise position, doors, and room width vary.

For a compact sofa, tape a 160 x 200 cm rectangle first. Place the 200 cm side parallel to the sofa when that better frames its length, then see whether the front legs can sit comfortably on the rug. If armchairs or a chaise also need to join the zone, test 200 x 240 cm or 240 x 280 cm. Do not increase the footprint merely to copy a standard rug chart if it blocks a route through the room.

What size modular rug works beside or under a bed?

Begin with the place your feet land. IKEA's bedroom guidance suggests roughly 50 cm of softness beside a bed as one general reference. A 40 cm tile grid cannot create exactly 50 cm without cutting: one tile gives 40 cm and two give 80 cm. Tape both options and choose the one that feels useful without crowding a wall, wardrobe, or door.

An 80 x 160 cm runner uses 8 tiles and can cover one side of a bed. Two matching runners use 16 tiles. For a partial under-bed rug, measure the actual bed frame rather than relying on labels such as queen or king, which differ by market. A 200 x 240 cm or 240 x 280 cm grid may be a starting test, but the useful exposed landing area matters more than how much carpet disappears beneath the bed.

What size carpet tile rug works under a home desk?

For a stationary chair or reading desk, 120 x 160 cm can create a compact 12-tile zone. For a rolling chair, 160 x 200 cm gives more travel room. Sit at the desk, push back normally, and confirm that the casters remain inside the layout instead of repeatedly crossing a raised tile edge.

TOLI developed Fabric Floor for residential use and does not recommend it for commercial offices where durability demands are different. A home-office layout still concentrates wear, so keep spare tiles, rotate the busiest squares when practical, and reconsider the setup if a heavy chair causes lifting or distortion.

Should you copy a standard 5 x 8 or 8 x 10 rug size?

You can use a familiar size as a reference, but a 40 cm grid will round it to complete modules. A nominal 5 x 8 ft target becomes 160 x 280 cm, using 28 tiles. A nominal 6 x 9 ft target becomes 200 x 280 cm, using 35 tiles. A nominal 8 x 10 ft target becomes 280 x 320 cm, using 56 tiles.

Those rounded footprints may be longer or wider than expected. Compare them with the simpler 160 x 200, 200 x 240, and 240 x 280 cm layouts before deciding. Modular carpet tiles are most useful when the grid solves the room you have, not when it imitates a conventional rug dimension at any cost.

Leave room for safety, cleaning, and spare tiles

TOLI Fabric Floor uses suction-treated backing without glue on compatible clean, smooth hard floors. Existing carpet, tatami, mortar, and concrete are listed as unsuitable bases, and some wood finishes should be sample-tested. Keep raised outside edges away from stairs, door swings, and busy walking routes.

TOLI also recommends keeping several spare tiles for washing and replacement. Add spares after the footprint is settled, not by enlarging the rug accidentally. Keep the original color codes with the order so one busy desk, pet, or sofa-approach tile can be identified later.

Carpet tile rug size FAQ

How many 40 cm tiles make a 160 x 200 cm rug?

A 4 x 5 grid uses 20 tiles. The finished footprint is about 63 x 78.7 inches.

What size carpet tile rug works in front of a sofa?

Start by taping 160 x 200 cm for a compact sofa. Test 200 x 240 cm or 240 x 280 cm when more seating must join the zone. Furniture connection and clear walking routes matter more than copying a standard size.

What size modular rug should go beside a bed?

An 80 x 160 cm runner uses 8 tiles. For an under-bed layout, measure the actual frame and leave a useful exposed landing area at the side or foot.

What size works under a home desk?

A 120 x 160 cm layout uses 12 tiles for a compact zone. A 160 x 200 cm layout uses 20 tiles and gives a rolling chair more room, but keep the caster route away from the raised outside edge.

How do I calculate the number of tiles?

Divide width and depth in centimeters by 40, round each result up, then multiply them. The online designer performs the same calculation automatically.
